Cooking took an entire afternoon until the fire reduced it to an hour. Remembering took a entire lifetime until writing reduced it to a single sheet. Calculating took an entire career until a machine reduced it to a button. Searching took an afternoon in a library until a text box reduced it to an instant.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each of those tools has obeyed the same law: lowering the price of a human verb by shifting its cost elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will call that rule The Law of Displacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The history of technology is not the history of the objects we have invented. It is the history of the verbs we have been able to stop paying such a high price for \u2014 and the places where we have moved their invoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Human Notes, energy doesn't disappear. It shifts. Any tool that makes a human verb cheaper shifts part of its cost somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing gets easier. It's only a matter of who absorbs the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Conceptual formulation<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Any cost reduction implies a redistribution of the cost, unless there is evidence that it has truly disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The displaced cost does not have to be equivalent to the benefit obtained. Ten seconds saved do not necessarily equate to ten seconds of attention spent. An eliminated click does not equate to an eliminated decision. Reduced physical effort does not equate to created dependency. An automated task does not equate to a preserved capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design does not work with equivalent costs. It works with human costs that can be incommensurable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third one that absorbs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a technology reduces the cost of an action, the question isn't just how much it reduces it. It's who it reduces it for. And whether that person can say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is always a third party that normally disappears from the equation: someone or something that absorbs the cost. It can be a machine, an infrastructure, a community, another body, the planet, or someone who has not yet been born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why the question never ends with the user. It starts with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three travel modes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regenerative<\/strong>
The cost shifts to a place capable of absorbing it without being damaged \u2014 and, above all, the displacement produces or preserves capacity. It is not enough for someone else to pay. What is moved must not leave anyone else incapable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The elevator. Climbing five floors used to be paid for with legs, knees, lungs. The cost moves to a shared infrastructure. The verb is still yours. A ramp does the same with a slope. Public transit, with driving. The question is always the same: the place that receives the cost, can it absorb it without breaking, and without breaking the one who lives inside it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extractive<\/strong>
The cost shifts toward whoever has the least power to reject it, negotiate it, or absorb it. The key is not where it lands. It is who can say no. What is extracted can be labor, attention, patience, decision-making, intimacy, energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One-hour delivery. The verb to get becomes almost free. Someone crosses the city faster, with impossible timing. Your comfort may be financed by the urgency of another body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultra-fast fashion makes dressing cheap. Someone, somewhere else on the planet, pays with hours, with bodies, with an environment that cannot say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deferred<\/strong>
The cost moves toward the future of the same subject. The automation that saves you from deciding today, leaves you tomorrow without the muscle to decide. There is no visible \u00abother\u00bb here; the third party is you at another time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tool that gives you the task already solved has not given you capability back. It has given you the task. And in doing so, it may have atrophied the ability to solve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shift between verbs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A design doesn't just move costs. It moves capacities to act. It makes one verb cheaper and, in doing so, can make another more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shopping becomes easier. Comparing becomes harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remembering becomes easier. Deciding becomes harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting around becomes easier. Finding your way becomes harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waiting gets easier. Understanding what you are waiting for gets harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doing it gets easier. Learning how to do it may disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That's what makes Human Notes unique: the translation isn't just word for word. It's verb for verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scroll readability<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A tough question: does design make displacement visible or does it conceal it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two ways to make things cheaper. The one that shows the new price \u2014even if it is abstract: this is absorbed by the infrastructure, the community, the future\u2014 and the one that produces the illusion of gratuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interface that hides scrolling is more dangerous than the one that declares it, even though both perform it. Because a technology does not necessarily save us labor. It may simply make us stop seeing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some trips<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The elevator<\/strong>
Climbing five floors used to cost legs, knees, and lungs. The elevator does not eliminate that effort: it takes it out of the body and puts it into a system of electricity, maintenance, and shared infrastructure. The verb to climb is still yours; what has changed is who pays the effort required to do it. When movement works well, the whole is not left more fragility: capacity is redistributed without being destroyed. Design has not made the cost disappear. It has moved it to a place built to receive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. IKEA<\/strong>
The furniture arrives cheaper and takes up less space precisely because the design has shifted part of the work onto the customer. Assembling, aligning, tightening screws: what the factory used to pay for is now paid for by the buyer's body in their living room. The cost has not been eliminated; it has been built into the product as just another phase of the process. IKEA doesn't just sell an object: it sells a deliberate shift of the assembly effort toward whoever agrees to pay for it as part of the purchase. It is one of the clearest examples of the law because the shift is purposely designed into the business model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. The digital camera<\/strong>
Taking a photograph used to cost film, development, and the awareness that every shot had a price. The digital camera reduced that cost to almost zero. The verb to capture became free. But the cost did not disappear: it moved to selecting. When you could take 36 photos, choosing was cheap because there were few. When you can take three thousand, production becomes cheaper and attention becomes more expensive. Design solved the problem of capturing and handed us the problem of deciding what deserves to be saved. Attention is also energy, and here it has become the new bottleneck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Google Search<\/strong>
Finding information used to take time, travel, and access to libraries. The search engine drastically reduced that cost. The verb \"to find\" became almost instantaneous. But as the cost of access decreased, the weight of evaluation increased. Now the problem is not just finding information, but distinguishing what deserves to be believed. Design solved access and handed us the burden of discrimination. It did not eliminate intellectual labor: it changed the verb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. ChatGPT and generation tools<\/strong>
Writing, summarizing, translating, or programming becomes radically cheaper. The system takes on a huge portion of the production work. But the verb doesn\u2019t disappear\u2014it transforms. Writing can become verifying. Researching, evaluating. Producing, selecting. Design has not eliminated intellectual effort; it has shifted it toward oversight. And here lies the most pressing question posed by Human Notes: Which capabilities does the tool return to you, and which does it begin to perform on your behalf?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the body<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a place from which this law can be seen more clearly: a body that can no longer afford to pay for all the verbs. When capacity is limited, the price stops being abstract. Starting costs something. Deciding costs something. Getting up from a chair costs something. The body registers the movement because it can no longer absorb it in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It's not that illness explains design. It's that fragility increases the resolution with which the real price of things is seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cost worth staying for<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The problem is not shifting the cost. Every tool that helps us does so in some way. The problem is not looking at where. Nothing becomes easy. It only changes who absorbs the difference. Not every cost must be eliminated. Some costs sustain capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why the question never ends with the user. It starts with them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
